Here’s Where to Check Your Car’s Electrical System to Prevent Short Circuits

 

Heavy rain and flooded roads are often unavoidable. Sometimes, we have no choice but to drive through deep water. However, did you know that “water and moisture” are the ultimate enemies of a vehicle’s electrical system?

After driving through flooded areas (especially if the water level reaches above half of your wheels), neglecting your vehicle can lead to rusted terminals, system malfunctions, or even a severe “short circuit” that could fry the entire electrical system. This is especially critical for commercial trucks (such as the Isuzu N/F Series) that endure heavy-duty usage across all weather conditions.

Today, TMH Lighting has compiled 4 critical areas in your vehicle’s electrical system that you must inspect immediately after driving through a flood.

1. Headlights, Taillights, and Fog Lights (Lighting Housings)

Lighting housings are positioned low and have a high chance of direct contact with water. Inspect the exterior to see if there is “condensation trapped inside” or “water pooling” at the bottom of the housing.

• The Danger: If water seeps into the bulb socket, it can cause the bulb to blow or create a short circuit at the plug.

• How to Check/Fix: If you find minor condensation, it might be temporary moisture. Try leaving your headlights on for a while; the heat will help evaporate it. However, if there are large droplets or pooling water, the rubber seals around the housing or bulb socket have likely degraded. You should remove the assembly, clean it, dry it completely, and apply new silicone or replace the rubber seals.

2. Fuse Box

The fuse box acts as the frontline defense against short circuits. Most vehicles have two fuse boxes: one in the cabin and one under the hood.

• The Danger: If water splashes into the engine bay’s fuse box, it will short out the fuses and relays, causing the vehicle’s electrical system to shut down immediately.

• How to Check/Fix: Open the fuse box cover in the engine bay to check for water stains, mud, or moisture. If you spot any signs of moisture, disconnect the battery terminals immediately and use compressed air or a moisture-displacing spray to clean it (never start the engine if water has entered the fuse box).

3. Wire Connectors & Sensors

Modern vehicles are packed with electronic systems and sensors all around (such as ABS sensors at the wheels), connected by plastic electrical plugs.

• The Danger: While these plugs are designed to be somewhat waterproof, as the vehicle ages, the internal rubber seals can harden and degrade. This allows water to seep in, causing oxidation or a short circuit.

• How to Check/Fix: Inspect wire connectors in low-lying areas or places exposed to splashing. If a plug is loose or the rubber seal is torn, wrap it securely with electrical tape or use an electrical contact cleaner spray to displace the moisture.

4. Alternator & Starter Motor

These two components are often mounted relatively low in the engine bay, making them highly susceptible to being submerged or heavily splashed.

• The Danger: Water and mud debris that block the alternator’s operation will cause it to fail, preventing it from recharging the battery.

• How to Check/Fix: After driving through a flood, rinse off any mud from the alternator with clean water (while the engine is cold) and let the vehicle idle for a while so the heat can dry out the moisture. Keep an eye on the battery warning light on your dashboard; if it stays illuminated, the alternator might already be shorted or damaged.
